WRF Model Output Visualization with ParaView

Abstract: One of the goals for the U.S. Army Research Laboratory's (ARL) Mission Execution Modeling Team is to implement visualization techniques on Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model output using Kitware's ParaView 4D data visualization software. The objective is to use ParaView in conjunction with a tool from the Model Evaluation Tools (MET) suite called Method for Object-based Diagnostic Evaluation (MODE) in order to verify the accuracy of the WRF model output. To achieve this, Python scripts have been developed to assist the conversion and importation of WRF model output into ParaView-readable format called the VTK structured file (VTS) format for visual analysis and object definition. The first of these scripts allows the user to convert WRF model output to VTK format. The second enables the user to load a VTS file into ParaView and, based on a series of questions, displays the data the user wishes to see. Finally, the third script allows the user to create an animation displaying the data of their choosing from 25 hourly WRF model output files that have been converted to VTS. These scripts and demonstrations of the example output from them have been included in the guide.
