Abstract: Pilot variability must be addressed in order to make sure the data collected by a Health and Usage Maintenance System (HUMS) is realistic enough to help determine aircraft usage. Since variability is the dispersion of the data, it is important to evaluate whether or not the pilot's individual techniques affect the damage data accumulated. The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) came up with a Design of Experiment (DOE) that would assess the pilot variability for Sikorsky aircrafts flight regime recognition algorithms on the UH-60M HUMS. Since addressing variability is a statistical process, ARL used the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to analyze the variance that occurs when there are various pilots following the same flight regimes. The null hypothesis being tested in this analysis is that pilot variability has no impact on the effectiveness of the regime recognition algorithms at the 95% confidence level. This report explains how ARL assessed pilot variability and how there is no bias in the software with respect to pilot change.
