Improved Solver Settings for 3D Exploding Wire Simulations in ALEGRA

Abstract: We are interested in simulating a variety of problems in 3 dimensions featuring large electric currents using the Sandia National Laboratories multiphysics code, ALEGRA. However, many such simulations were prohibitively slow due in part to unoptimized (matrix) solver settings. In this report, we address that by varying 6 parameters in the algebraic multigrid preconditioner,Trilinos/ML, as implemented in ALEGRA. Three parameters impacted performance with one dominating. We provide insight to solver behavior as well as recommended values.
