Application of Computational Fluid Dynamics to a Preliminary Extended Area Protection System (EAPS) Projectile

Abstract: Computational fluid dynamics approaches were used to compute the flow fields and aerodynamic forces and moments of a slender-body finned projectile. Steady-state numerical results have been obtained for a series of cases, with Mach numbers ranging from 1.5 to 5.0 and at angles of attack from 0? to 5?. Full three-dimensional computations were performed using a cubic k-epsilon turbulence model. In general, the computed aerodynamic coefficients compared well with available semiempirical data.
