Data Translation to Support the Battlespace Terrain Ownership Project

Abstract: The U.S. Army Research Laboratory?s Battlespace Decision Support Team is exploring methods of portraying control or power influence in the battlespace. The Battlespace Terrain Ownership project uses resultant data from the successive application of three computer programs to present a graphical display of areas of influence in the battlespace: combat simulation, the data translation process, and the control algorithm and associated display. The first step involves the creation of a combat scenario in One Semi-Automated Forces (OneSAF) Testbed Baseline (OTB) v2.0; OTB provides data on all entities in the battlespace and both direct- and indirect-fire events. The second step is converting this data into a format for the control algorithm. The control algorithm then interprets different factors in the battlespace and provides a visual display. This report addresses the second step, the data translation process.
