Purification and Characterization of Methylene bis-(4-Cyclohexylisocyanate)

Report No. ARL-TR-5401

Abstract: Commercially available methylene bis-(4-cyclohexylisocyanate) stereoisomers were manipulated to produce fractions enriched in various isomers. This was achieved by taking advantage of differences in melting/boiling points of sterioisomeric molecules. The resulting fractions contain levels of trans-trans isomers between 7% and 66%, and cis-cis isomers between 11% and 41%. Gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy and high performance liquid chromatography were evaluated as possible techniques that could be employed for quantifying the levels of isomers in enriched samples.
