Ceramic Er3+:AlN – Cross Sections and Lifetime of Er in its Dominant Site

Abstract: We have studied laser-related spectroscopic properties of erbium (Er)-doped aluminum nitride (AlN) prepared by colleagues in the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Weapons and Materials Research Directorate (WMRD). There is spectroscopic evidence of multiple sites for Er, but one site seems to dominate the spectra. Here we identify a number of the energy levels of Er3+ in that site, and report the temperature dependence of its 4I13/2-manifold fluorescence lifetime. We give the logic and results of a detailed analysis, leading to an estimate of the absorption and stimulated emission cross sections of the 4I13/24I15/2 transitions.
