Parameter Estimation for Smart Projectiles Using the Filter Error Method

Abstract: The Bayesian filter error method (BFEM) is explained and applied to the problem of estimating smart projectile aerodynamic parameters and measurement errors from free-flight data. The mathematical models of the dynamic plant and measurements for free-flight smart projectile experiments are reviewed or derived in the context of implementing them in an extended Kalman filter (EKF) framework, and their relevant parameters identified. The BFEM is discussed in the context of a maximum a posteriori estimator. The method is used to estimate all relevant model parameters for the smart mortar system from a simulated data set. It is found that the BFEM works moderately well when the model structure is correct, but straightforward application to a real data set would likely be insufficient to generate reliable parameter estimates.
