This publication describes the U.S. Army Research Office (ARO) research
programs for FY08. It includes:
- A brief review of the strategy employed
to guide ARO research investments and noteworthy issues affecting
the implementation of that strategy;
- Statistical information on 6.1 funding
and program proposal activity; and
- Research trends and accomplishments of
the individual ARO scientific divisions.
The vision of the Director, Army Research Office (ARO) is to
develop the science and technology that will maintain the Army's
overwhelming capability in the expanding range of present and future
operations. This requires the exploitation of scientific opportunities
and discoveries to provide unprecedented new technologies for the
future, as well as the focusing of scientific talent to address current
Army needs. In this role, the ARO is the Army's premier extramural
basic research agency, having the mission of conducting discovery
research targeted at developing and exploiting innovative advances to
insure continuing technological superiority. Further, ARO guides the
transition of those advances to the appropriate applied research and
advanced development organizations. ARO is the executor of the Army's
extramural basic research program in the physical sciences (physics,
chemistry, and life sciences), the engineering sciences (mechanical,
electronic, materials, and environmental), and mathematics and
information sciences (mathematics, computing, network, and
informational sciences).
