Welcome to the Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED):

Collage of HRED ImagesThe U.S. Army Research Laboratory's Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED) is the principal Army organization for research and development (R&D) in the human dimension. HRED conducts a broad-based program of scientific research and technology directed toward optimizing Soldier performance and Soldier-machine interactions to maximize battlefield effectiveness. HRED also executes an analysis mission that provides the Army with human factors leadership to ensure that Soldier performance requirements are adequately considered in technology development and system design. HRED coordinates technologies within the Army, other services and their laboratories, industry, and academia to leverage basic and applied research opportunities for the benefit of the Army.

HRED Functions:

Developing and conducting a comprehensive Soldier-oriented R&D program directed towards the following:

  • development of human factors technologies and design principles that protect and extend the Soldier's physical, perceptual, cognitive, and psychological performance under hostile and highly stressed conditions;
  • enabling the individual Soldier, crew, and battle staff to comprehend and manage the vast quantities of data expected to flow across the digitized battlefield in both automated and degraded support modes
  • effectively integrating the Soldier-operator, maintainer, and trainer in evolving crew station, equipment, and unit designs.

Providing the Army with Human Factors Integration (HFI) technical expertise and leadership to ensure that Soldier performance requirements are adequately considered in technology development and system design.
