Team coached by ARL researcher wins Rookie All-Star Award

A FIRST Robotics Challenge team coached by Dr. Christopher Hoppel, a researcher with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory's Weapons and Materials Directorate, along with others, was named Rookie All-Star Award recipient at the 10th Chesapeake Regional competition held March 8-10 at the Baltimore Convention Center.
Absolute Zero Electricity from Techbrick in Havre de Grace, Md., was recognized for outstanding achievement by a first year team.
Techbrick Robotics was formed in 2004, starting with a LEGO club for homeschoolers that grew to form its first FIRST Lego League team. Techbrick now offers Jr. FIRST Lego League, FIRST Tech Challenge and most recently, FIRST Robotics Challenge teams.
Absolute Zero Electricity's members come from various high schools and numerous other FIRST teams. Absolute Zero Electricity currently meets to build and program our robot five or six times a week.
Sixty-three teams from 11 states and the District of Columbia, including 34 from Maryland competed in the REBOUND RUMBLE™, a 3-on-3 basketball game. Each two-minute game climaxed with the robots attempting to balance on bridges at mid-court. The action in the elimination rounds on Saturday grew particularly intense as teams worked together in three-team alliances.
More than 2,000 high school students, mentors, fans, educators and industry leaders joined Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake at the packed Baltimore Convention Center to witness robotics teams competing for spots at Championships held in St. Louis.
Nearly 200 volunteers and judges from some of the most highly regarded organizations in the area, including Booz Allen Hamilton, Lockheed Martin, NASA, and SAIC helped make this year's Chesapeake Regional possible. Sponsors provide resources including time and talent from technical mentors, services, equipment, financial contributions, and volunteers.
