ARL employees recognized for excellence in federal service

BALTIMORE, Md. - Twelve U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) employees were honored by the Baltimore Federal Executive Board (FEB) at the 45th annual Excellence in Federal Career Awards luncheon and ceremony on May 4.

Of the total number of ARL award recipients, seven employees were recognized in individual categories with a team of five being recognized for the collective work of their team.

The Baltimore FEB recognizes Maryland's federal agency employees each year during Public Service Recognition Week for excellence in job performance throughout the previous year. The 2012 awards program was held at Martin's West in Baltimore.

This year, the Baltimore FEB recognized 245 Maryland federal employees and military service members. Gold, Silver, and Bronze awards were presented to the winners in 20 different job excellence categories.

Dr. Kristopher Darling, a researcher in ARL's Weapons and Materials Research Directorate, won Gold in the individual category of Rookie Employee of the Year for Technical, Scientific and Program Support.

According to his award nomination, Darling was recognized for his initiative through his research endeavors and the remarkable results in identifying the make-up and improved techniques to safely manufacture a new class of metal alloys with superior properties.

Dr. John La Scala, Weapons and Materials Research Directorate; Karen Pizzolato, Survivability/Lethality Analysis Directorate; and Dr. John Powell, Weapons and Materials Research Directorate, were presented with Silver awards.

Bronze awards were presented to WMRD's Thomas Braswell, Todd Brinkman, Paul Duvall, Travis Payne, Benjamin Showalter, Eric Wilson, John Hightower and Heidi Maupin.

More than 1,000 federal officials, employees, military service members, family members, and guests participated in the event, which featured the Baltimore area U.S. Coast Guard Color Guard.

  • Dr. John J. La Scala - Outstanding Supervisor - Grade 13 and above
  • Karen Pizzolato - Outstanding Professional (Non-Supervisory) - Technical, Scientific and Program Support
  • Dr. John D. Powell - Distinguished Public Service Career

Bronze Awards

  • Thomas E. Braswell - Outstanding Para-Professional (Non-Supervisory) - Technical, Scientific and Program Support (Individual)
  • Todd Brinkman, Paul Duvall, Travis Payne, Benjamin Showalter and Eric
  • Wilson (Energetic Response Experimental Team) - Outstanding Para-Professional (Non-Supervisory) - Technical, Scientific and Program Support (Team)
  • John Hightower - Outstanding Administrative/Management Assistant (Individual)
  • Heidi Maupin - Volunteer Service/Community Outreach (Individual)
