Firepower: Made to Order

September 30, 2013

U.S. Army Research Laboratory scientists and engineers are studying ways to make more powerful energetic materials as part of an unconventional research project that investigates how and when a material releases it energy. ARL wants to provide soldiers of the future with the ability to control the amount of firepower delivered at a specific time from a single weapon solution. So from the same weapon, the lethality of a weapon could conceivably blow open a far-away cave of enemy combatants or stop an enemy convoy much closer.

Set apart from other nationally recognized research bodies, ARL has the only group within the Department of Defense or the Department of Energy whose main mission is to use theoretical chemistry and physics to characterize energetic materials properties and behavior, and the discoveries and knowledge coming out of this research area is brand new, and leaps ahead of past research.
