RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. -- The U.S. Army selected 54 students pursuing doctorate in military relevant research topics to receive three-year National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate fellowships.

The awardees are from 31 universities across 14 scientific disciplines in the United States.

The fellowship term, which begins September 2020, pays for full tuition and all mandatory fees, as well as providing a monthly stipend, a travel budget for professional development and annual health insurance funding.

Applications for the fiscal 2021 fellowship are open until Nov. 2, 2020.

The government established the program in 1989 by direction of Congress and is sponsored by the Army, Navy and Air Force. The program increases the number of U.S. citizens trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance. The Army Research Office, an element of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory, manages the program for the Army.

The fellowship also provides DOD civilian role models to help guide and shape the professional growth and learning of the fellows.

The objective of the fellowship and its mentorship program initiatives is to propel talented individuals to the forefront of discoveries and innovations relevant to the DOD; promote the growth of scientists/engineers within relevant DOD research disciplines; and support DOD science, engineering, and technology innovations now and in the future.

Since program inception, the government has awarded more than 4,000 fellowships with more than 60,000 applications received. This year, the DOD program selected 162 exceptionally individuals from 57 U.S. academic institutions.

The fiscal 2020 fellowship awardee list is available here.

Each year, DOD awards new three-year graduate fellowships (subject to the availability of funds) to individuals who have demonstrated ability and special aptitude for advanced training in science and engineering.
