Maj. Gen. John A. George, who took command of the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command last month, is touring the organization and meeting face-to-face with Army scientists and engineers. The general said building partnerships across the command is vital in the Army Futures Command.
"I don't think that AFC and the Army will really be successful to the degree that we can until we're able to do that. That we find the synergy across our organizations," George said. "We've got to be able to partner, increase our collaboration, make sure we're working across those functional areas in this command in order to actually deliver."
The Army Research Laboratory is the Army's sole fundamental research laboratory focused on cutting-edge scientific discovery, technological innovation and transition of knowledge products. The general acknowledged this and discussed the importance of maintaining a workforce ready to build the Army of the future.
"Foundational and probably the bedrock to our success is our talent," he said. "And you all are our talent, especially when we look at the charter of your organization, where you came from, your skill sets, your experiences, your education. All that to give you the right attributes to do your job is usually important. We have got to focus on talent management and continue to recruit the right people."
George observed a robotics demonstration and learned how Army researchers are working on autonomy and teaming.
The general also met with newly appointed lab director Dr. Pat Baker, who started his tenure Dec. 8.
"If people are generally interested in doing something that's challenging, puts them as part of the team, that gives them a sense of purpose that's larger than themselves, when they can come to work every day in an environment that is sort of fun and they work with colleagues that they respect, they're treated with dignity and respect, that in my mind is another observation that I have," he said.
