Army researchers collaborate with University of Central Florida

ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. (January 22, 2016) - Army researchers hosted a visit from an assistant professor from the University of Central Florida, Jan. 19, 2016.

Dr. Subith Vasu, from the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department at the Center for Advanced Turbomachinery and Energy Research, provided U.S. Army Research Laboratory scientists with a seminar on shock tube, high-temperature reactions, chemical kinetics modeling and laser diagnostics studies.

According to a recent UCF Engineering & Computer Science newsletter, the Department of Energy awarded the scientist $1.1 million to investigate how power plants might be able to abandon the use of water to generate energy from steam and instead use supercritical CO2, a fluid state of carbon dioxide.

"Supercritical carbon dioxide is an attractive alternative to steam," according to the release. "If the technology can be developed to make the switch, it could mean less use of water - a natural resource in short supply in some parts of the nation." During his visit, Vasu toured the ARL Weapons and Material Research Directorate's Novel Energetics Research Facility, Detonation Sciences Experimental Facility and Combustion Research Facility.

"ARL research teams engaged in further discussions with Dr. Vasu on collaboration in energetic materials research, including the Disruptive Energetics Initiative under the ARL Open Campus Sciences for Lethality and Protection Campaign," said Steve Taulbee, a mechanical engineer with WMRD. "It is envisioned that these interactions will lead to productive collaborations."
